Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla attended the Mid Term Council Meeting of The Indian Engineers Federation (INDEF) North Eastern Region (NER) held at the Tourist Lodge,Chaltlang today. The Meeting was hosted by the Mizoram Engineer Service Association.
Speaking on the accasion the Chief Minister said Mizoram lags behind other north east states in development due to 20 long years of insurgency and it is not easy to catch up with them given the existing poor infrastructure and resources, he added. He appeal to the visiting engineers from other states to bear with what little comfort and inadequate accomodation Mizoram could provide apart from hospitality and goodwill which is in abundance, he quips.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for more interaction amongst the diverse people of India to ensure communal harmony and national integration. He recalled an incident in which the so-called national leader mistook him for a foreigner while on tour across India adding that even more seemingly educated persons are ignorant as to where Mizoram is located, a very unfortunate experience he lamented.
The Chief Minister cites the fast growing Indian economy where infrastructure is being given a major thrust by the central and state government. This is reflected in central government's programme of IAY, PMGSY and others besides mega projects such as ongoing East West Corridor under the National Highways Projects he said. Lal Thanhawla also cites several projects undertaken with the aids of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. He urged the engineers to to give top priority to quality as they, the engineers, play a key role in the infrastructural development.
The Chief Minister stated that Mizoram, as with the rest of North Eastern States, has undertaken a number construction projects being looked after by the State engineers.Unlike central India, the north east states experience heavy rainfall in the monsoon, a factor to be dove-tailed in all construction acivities, from structural designing to actual constructions, he saud. He reiterated the importance of conserving ecology and environment in the process of executing developmental works.
The Chief Minister wishes the engineers a very fruitful meeting.
INDEF houses all kinds of engineers,be it they from CWC, BSNL, Railway, and many others. It comprise of 6 differnt zones, NER being tha latest - it was constituted in 2005. In today's meeting the present INDEF Chairman AB Thakare from Maharashtra and immediate past Chairman M Nagaraj from Karnataka also spoke on the occasion applauding Lal Thanhawla for having created the post of Government Secretary exclusively for engineers and also for implementing the central 6th Pay to its employees pointing out that he is a true leader.
The Meeting discussed and deliberate he 12 points agenda in the 2nd session. Engineers from all NE States except Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh were represented.
