519/2024-2025

Aizawl, 27th March 2025: The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalduhoma, today graced the General Body Meeting of the Former Legislators Association of Mizoram (FLAM) as Chief Guest at the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Annexe Conference Hall.

In his address, the Chief Minister reflected on his political journey, stating, “Politics is unpredictable, and being a candidate is never easy. The number of candidates contesting is high, but ultimately, the people’s decision is what matters. FLAM members are truly blessed and fortunate to have had this opportunity.” He also highlighted that Mizoram was among the pioneers in initiating the live telecast of Assembly Sessions, which has encouraged successive generations of MLAs to maintain decorum and dignity during the sessions. Due to the good behavior exhibited by former MLAs in the House, present-day MLAs continue to uphold the same standard. The Chief Minister emphasized that FLAM members have set a commendable example for future generations. He wished them physical and mental well-being, encouraging them to remain active and share valuable advice with the younger generation.

The Chief Minister also released two books authored by Prof. JV Hluna during the event.

FLAM President Pu Liansuama, in his presidential speech, expressed gratitude to the Mizoram government for strengthening the Ex-MLA MR Bill and acknowledged the persistent efforts made over the years to achieve this. He conveyed the members’ appreciation to Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma for addressing their concerns.

FLAM, established in 1994, currently has 117 members and 59 associate members, comprising the widows of deceased former MLAs/MPs. This year, two associate members, Pi Rothangi (wife of Ch. Chhunga) and Pi Nghakliani (wife of Lalrinliana of Dawrpui), celebrated their centenary birthdays and were honored at the event. Among the 33 members elected during Mizoram’s first UT elections in 1972 (30 elected and 3 nominated), seven members are still alive, with three of them attending the meeting.

During 2024-25, FLAM lost three members – Pi Lalzarliani Hmar (wife of Pu Biakchhunga), Pi Pangkungi (wife of Pu H. Lalsangzuala), and Pu Kapoor Chand Thakuri (nominated MLA, 1972). As per their request, the Mizoram State Assembly, during the last Budget Session on 17th March this year, passed The Mizoram Salaries, Allowances, and Pension of Members of the Legislative Assembly (Amendment) Bill, 2025, improving the medical facilities and allowances provided to former legislators.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. JV Hluna, Vice President, while Upa H. Liansailova offered prayers. The obituary for the deceased members was led by Pu John Rotluangliana, General Secretary. Reports were also presented by General Secretary Pu TC Pachhunga and Treasurer Pu Rochhunga Ralte. General Secretary Pu K. Liantlinga delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the meeting.
