Aizawl, 27th June 2025: The World Taekwondo Black Belt Awarding Ceremony, organised by the Mizoram Amateur Taekwondo Association (MATA), was held today at the Taxation Conference Hall. Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma, who is an Honorary 7th Dan Black Belt, graced the function as Chief Guest.
In his address, the Chief Minister stated that a Black Belt in Taekwondo represents not just technical mastery of various skills but also successful completion of rigorous examinations. He noted that while the Black Belt is not easily earned, many people mistakenly believe it can be easily obtained. The award is a symbol of discipline, self-control, and capability, signifying a person who can lead others with integrity and skill.
He highlighted that Taekwondo can be a meaningful discipline not just for those aspiring to be champions or professionals, but also for anyone seeking personal growth and self-discipline. He encouraged the youth to take up Taekwondo as a path of self-improvement. Even if it does not lead to great competitive success, it contributes significantly to one’s personal development, he said.
The Chief Minister also touched on the increasing social challenges, especially the growing rate of crimes against women and minors in the state. He noted that Taekwondo can serve as a powerful tool of self-defense, especially for women. Since Taekwondo is also an Olympic sport, it provides opportunities to bring honour to India on the global stage.
The event was chaired by Dr. Lalbiakmawia Ngente, Adviser to MATA. Rev. C. Rosangzuala led the opening prayer, and Master Joseph Thansanga, General Secretary of MATA, presented the report.
Founded in 1987, MATA has been organising the Black Belt Awarding Ceremony annually since 2006. This year marks the 11th edition of the event. A total of 60 individuals were awarded Black Belts.
MATA has consistently brought glory to Mizoram by winning several medals at both national and international levels. It currently has nine NIS-qualified coaches, and with today’s additions, the total number of Black Belt holders under MATA has reached 358.
In June last year, the World Taekwondo Headquarters conferred the Honorary 7th Dan Black Belt and a Letter of Appreciation to Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma in recognition of his distinguished public service and his contributions to the development of Taekwondo in the state.
