79/2026-2027

Aizawl, the 14th May 2026: The College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (CVSc&AH), Central Agricultural University (CAU), Selesih, today organised a Press Conference for media persons to highlight the importance of adopting sustainable agricultural practices that reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The event, held at the Conference Hall of CVSc&AH, Selesih, was themed “Promoting Alternative Agriculture Practices and Enhancing Nutrient Management Efficiency.”

Dr. Lalnuntluangi Hmar, Dean of CVSc&AH, CAU, Selesih, addressed the gathering and underscored the critical need for achieving self-sufficiency in food production. She emphasised the vital role of the media in creating widespread awareness about scientifically validated and environmentally friendly farming methods. Acknowledging the multiple challenges confronting the agricultural sector, Dr. Lalnuntluangi Hmar pointed to declining soil fertility, rising costs of agricultural inputs, the impacts of climate change and the long-term harmful effects of excessive chemical fertiliser use. She stressed the need to move beyond a narrow focus on increasing yield and instead adopt farming practices that ensure long-term soil health, environmental sustainability and improved economic returns for farmers.

She noted that sustainable farming practices, which minimise soil degradation, can significantly reduce production costs while increasing farmers’ net income. In this context, she highlighted that India is actively encouraging a shift towards organic and alternative farming systems with reduced dependence on chemical inputs. The Dean informed the media that the three Central Agricultural University institutions in Mizoram - CVSc&AH Selesih, College of Horticulture Thenzawl and KVK Aizawl - are actively implementing various initiatives to promote alternative agriculture. These include farmer training programmes, Kisan Gosthis, field demonstrations and the extensive use of social media to reach farmers across the state.

She informed the media that the College of Horticulture, Thenzawl, has been producing and distributing Liquid Biofertilizers to farmers. The three institutions are committed to delivering the latest scientific knowledge and technologies to the farming community. Today’s press conference was organised as part of these ongoing efforts, she added. Dr. Lalnuntluangi Hmar appealed to all stakeholders to adopt improved, safe and more profitable farming practices and to extend full support to farmers during this transition. She also assured that experts from Central Agricultural University are always available to assist farmers facing any agricultural challenges.
