Chairman, State Election Commission, Mizoram, Pu C. Ropianga, today announced the Schedule for the first general election to the Aizawl Municipal Council (AMC). According to the Schedule, notification calling all Municipal Wards to elect Councillors to the Aizawl Municipal Council will be issued on the 4th October 2010.Thereafter, nominations can be filed by candidates till 11th October 2010. The nominations will be scrutinised on12th October and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be 14th October. The election date has been fixed on Wednesday, the 3rd November 2010, from 7:30 AM in the morning to 4:00 PM in the evening; votes will be counted on next day, the 4th November. The entire election process shall be completed before 16th November 2010, according to the Schedule.

Aizawl Municipal Council has 19 Wards, out of which 6 have been reserved for women. The total number of voters stands at 1,68,649; 80,390 males and 88,259 females within 174 Polling Stations. Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will used during the elections. In order to strengthen the cause of free and fair elections and to ensure greater participation of citizens in the electoral process, the Commission will give Best Electoral Practices Awards in five categories - Best Polling Party; Best Ward in observance of Model Code of Conduct; Highest Voter turn-out Polling Station and oldest Voter - Male & Female.

As the date of election has been announced, the Chairman, State Election Commission said that the Model Code of Conduct will come into immediate effect within the geographical limits of the Aizawl Municipality. At the same programme he also launched the website(www.secmizoram.in) of the State Election Commission Mizoram.
