Aizawl, the 29th August 2020 : Elections to local rural and urban bodies – Village Councils and Local Councils respectively were held on 27.08.2020 across the state in 9 Districts out of the 11 Districts. Polling was conducted in 550 Village Councils out of 558 in 9 Districts and 59 Local Councils out of 83 within the limits of Aizawl Municipal Corporation. Elections to 8 Village Councils within Aizawl city and 24 Local Councils within Aizawl District were postponed due to some villages and localities in Aizawl being declared Containment Zones and as also as a precautionary measure in others due to cases of Home Quarantine and on-going contact tracing of suspected COVID-19 cases.
Polling took place peacefully across the state with volunteers from Mizoram Peoples Forum and the Local Level/Village Level Task Forces ensuring that voters followed social distancing norms and use of face masks. State Election Commission communicated the outcomes late this evening through a press communique.
The voting percentage in the Local Council Elections was reported as 60.34 percent and the total votes polled was 90,926 (males – 42,519 and females – 48,407). The ruling MNF won in 50 Local Councils; the INC won in 4 Local Councils; Zoram People's Movement won in 1 Local Council and 4 Local Councils are have no clear majority.
Out of 550 Village Councils for which elections were held, the ruling MNF garnered 324 Village Councils, the INC won in 96 Village Councils, Zoram People's Movement in 38 VCs, Independents in 23 VCs and in 69 Village Councils the outcome had no clear majority.
Next week the Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be convened for three days starting from 1st September. A separate SOP in this regard has been issued by the Government and all precautionary measures with regard to the SOP are stringently being followed in the run up to the Assembly Session. This will be the first time the Assembly meets since the series of Lockdown which began in the third week of March. The Budget Session was convened early this year in February and all budgetary processes were completed well ahead of the Lockdown
Elections to Village Councils under the three Autonomous District Councils governed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution are held separately. Lawngtlai and Siaha Districts cover these ADCs
