Aizawl, the 11th June 2021 : Information & Public Relations Minister Pu Lalruatkima who also holds Land Revenue & Settlement and Rural Development portfolios today graced the Green Mizoram Day 2021 ceremonial function at the campus of Mizoram College of Nursing (MCON) at Falkawn near Aizawl. The function was organised by Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department in a toned down manner observing all SOPs amidst the pandemic.

Minister Pu Lalruatkima outlined that the need of the hour was to combat the effects of climate change through conservation of forests, biodiversity and water sources. He noted that the recent forest fires which ravaged the state was the biggest the state has experienced so far and the acute water scarcity faced by some areas of the state was a warning bell. He said that these events make environmental conservation a primacy that must be accorded utmost importance by all. He highlighted some measures taken by Land Revenue & Settlement and Rural Development to conserve forests and water sources.

State Level and Aizawl District Level Fire Prevention Awards were also presented on the occasion. At the state level, the first prize was bagged by Mamit District, the second prize went to Serchhip District while the third prize was awarded to Siaha District for their efforts in fire prevention. Within Aizawl District, Sumsuih was awarded the Best Village for Fire Prevention while the second and third places went to Tachhip and Mualkhang villages.

After the function the Minister and senior officials planted saplings within the campus of MCON to mark the occasion.

Green Mizoram Day has been held annually since 1998 and over the years lakhs of saplings have been planted across the state.
