As a part of the ongoing efforts to expand critical care facility in the State amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Health Minister of Mizoram Dr R. Lalthangliana today inaugurated a newly established 10-bedded Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward at the Civil Hospital Aizawl today.

With this expansion, the Medical ICU at Civil Hospital Aizawl now has 15 ICU beds, with another 10 beds at near completion stage. A 4 bedded paediatric ICU and another 4 bedded Obstetric ICU are also being readied, and upon their completion, would take the total ICU beds at the Civil Hospital to 33. The Government has recruited 5 doctors, 25 nurses and 10 IV Grade staff to man the newly expanded ICU.

The 34 bedded ICU at Dedicated COVID Hospital, Zoram Medical College (ZMC) is also being expanded with 20 additional beds in the pipeline, and 50 additional nurses to be recruited by the Government. Efforts are also underway to set up an ICU ward at Civil Hospital, Lunglei.

At his inaugural address, the Health Minister thanked the healthcare workers of Mizoram, who continue to be at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic, which has wreaked havoc in the state since March of last year. He also took the opportunity to thank the Finance Minister of Mizoram, CM Pu Zoramthanga for his continued guidance and support to the H&FW Department, as the State continues to battle record number of infections. 

The Health Minister also announced that efforts are underway to install a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine at the Civil Hospital.

 The Medical ICU Ward at the Civil Hospital Aizawl was established in the year 2007 with 3 beds, and was subsequently expanded to 5 beds in 2012. 

Today’s inauguration program was attended by Health & Family Welfare Board Vice-Chairman Dr. ZR Thiamsanga, MLA, officials from the H&FW Department, doctors of the hospital, both retired and presently in service,  Aizawl City Local council Association leaders, Dawrpui Local Council Chairman, Non-Government Hospital Association of Mizoram leaders and other invitees.
