Serchhip the 12th September, 2024 : An intensive IEC Campaign titled "India's Fight Against HIV/AIDS & STI" was held today at Serchhip Auditorium, as part of a nationwide initiative to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STI). The campaign kicked off with a rally that saw participation from students and citizens, who marched from Serchhip AOC Road to the Serchhip Auditorium.

Following the rally, the awareness program continued at the auditorium, where the Deputy Commissioner of Serchhip, Pu Paul L. Khuma, delivered the  inaugural address. Emphasizing the importance of preventing and controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS and STIs, he stated that while these diseases pose a serious threat, they can be avoided with proper care and awareness. He urged students to remain vigilant, practice safe behaviors, and avoid practices such as drug use and unsafe sexual activities. He also emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge gained from the campaign in daily life and urged participants to spread awareness within their communities, with the goal of making Serchhip District, Mizoram, and the nation free from HIV/AIDS. DC Pu Paul L. Khuma presided over the official opening of the IEC Campaign.

Dr. Lalnunhlima Khiangte, District AIDS Control Officer, highlighted the alarming statistics regarding HIV in Mizoram. Since 1990, Mizoram has reported 29,514 HIV-positive cases, making it the state with the highest prevalence of HIV in India. In Serchhip alone, 621 HIV-positive cases were detected from July 2003 to July 2024, accounting for 1.99% of the total tests conducted. The district reported 84 positive cases in the past year, with sexual transmission being the most common mode of transmission, representing 60% of cases.

The campaign will continue with various activities designed to engage the community, including musical drama, debate, and poster competitions aimed at raising awareness among students. The awards ceremony for these competitions will be held on Friday, September 13.

The event also featured training sessions conducted by the ICTC Counselor and OSTC Medical Officer to further educate participants on HIV prevention and control measures.

This ongoing initiative is a crucial step towards reducing HIV transmission and ensuring a healthier future for Serchhip and beyond.
