Aizawl, 28 November 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is inviting keen participants from classes 8th, 9th, and 11th to contest the National Level Examination to promote interest and awareness about weather and climate sciences among students.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) is celebrating its 150th anniversary on January 15, 2025. To commemorate this historic milestone, IMD has planned year-long activities starting January 15, 2024, culminating in a grand Foundation Day celebration at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in the presence of distinguished dignitaries.

As part of the celebrations, IMD will organize a National Meteorological Olympiad (Met- Olympiad) to promote interest and awareness about weather and climate sciences among students. The Olympiad will target students from 8th, 9th, and 11th classes, conducted at state and national levels. 

About the Olympiad 

The Olympiad will be conducted in two stages: 

1.      State Level: An online test for registered participants.

2.      National Level: A contest and workshop for state-level winners in New Delhi. 

The Olympiad features a one-hour online examination with 60 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on meteorology and related sciences. Study materials, a syllabus, and sample questions are available on the official portal (https://mausam.imd.gov.in/met-oly/) 

Eligibility and Registration 

Participants must ensure their devices (computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile) and internet connectivity are compatible with the online test platform. Organizers are not liable for technical issues during the exam. 

Awards 

State-Level Prizes 

For each class (8, 9, 11): 

  • 1st Prize: ₹5000
  • 2nd Prize: ₹3000
  • 3rd Prize: ₹2000

The top three state-level winners from each class will be invited to New Delhi for: 

·         One-day workshop on January 14, 2025.

·         Participation in IMD’s 150th Foundation Day Celebration on January 15, 2025. 

All travel and lodging expenses for the winners and one accompanying teacher or guardian will be covered by IMD. 

National-Level Prizes 

State-level top two winners from each class will compete at the national level. National winners will receive: 

  • 1st Place: ₹25,000
  • 2nd Place: ₹15,000
  • 3rd Place: ₹10,000 

Additionally, certificates of participation (soft copies) will be awarded to all students who will complete the Olympiad.
