In an Information & Public Relations Department organised SEDP Press Project Site Visit, Mizoram Journalists' Association (MJA) Lawngtlai District visited the ongoing construction of Indo-Myanmar trade route, the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and a tourist destination of 'lung mak' (castle of beino) in the Chhimtuipui river near Hruitezawl in Lawngtlai District.

The team of MJA, headed by their President Pu Lalngheta Ralte, was led by Lawngtlai DIPRO Pu C. Lalhruaitluanga, MIS. A prominent journalist in Lawngtlai, Pu V. Lallianzuala, Editor, Lairam daily newspaper flagged off the team from Lawngtlai Press Club.

The team was received by junior engineers of PWD Multi Modal Project Division and the contractors in their visit of Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) road construction while village leaders and NGO leaders of Hruitezawl accompanied them in their visit to lung mak.

The initial estimated length of Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) road within the state of Mizoram was 99.83 kms which is now cut short into 88 kms after several recuts. 87 kms is to be blacktopped and 8 bridges to be constructed. The road was divided into 3 packages and a contract of package-I (0-35 kms) was given to RDS Company, package-II (35-60 kms) to Atlanta-ARSS Company and package-III (60-88 kms) to RDS.

Blacktopping of 81.500 kms out of 87.000 kms has been completed. Construction of bridges has been going on for 6 bridges out of 8. Proof checking of bridge design for the first and the last bridges is being done at IIT Guwahati, works for which will be commenced once it's approved. The total physical achievement is 94.20% and all works except construction of the said two bridges will be completed within this year, said the PWD MMPD Executive Engineer Er C. Lalhumhima.

The formation of the road is 12 m wide and blacktop width is 7 m. Subgrade 500mm, GSB 300mm, WMM 250mm, DBM 70mm and BC 40mm are used and the total height of the blacktop from bare soil is 2'2". Bridges will have a sub-structure and superstructure. Bearing manufacture of the superstructure is being done at Kolkata and steel girder superstructure at Noida, Delhi.

The concerned department felt that proof checking of bridge design took rather long and reported that construction has been halted for a total 430 days due to land acquisition. They plead that authorities may try to solve the existing land acquisition problems as soon as possible for timely completion of the construction.

The MJA then visited a natural cut rock formation of Chhimtuipui river called 'lung mak/lung mawi', or as called by the Mara 'Castle of Beino', near Hruitezawl in Lawngtlai District. The rocks as well as the river itself provide a refreshing and amazing experience and the river is also suitable for rafting. With a better intervention of the government, it has a potential to become one of the best tourist destinations in Mizoram.

Lung mak is situated in Chhimtuipui river, the border river of Lai Autonomous District Council (Lawngtlai District) and Mara Autonomous District Council (Siaha District). It can be approached from both Siaha and Lawngtlai side. From Lawngtlai, the route is through the KMMTTP road till Ngengpuitlang junction at about 60 kms and it proceeds on to Ngengpuitlang - Tuidangtlang - Hruitezawl road. It should be approached by boat from Hruitezawl up the river.
