With the pandemic Covid-19 looming large and following the Supreme Court's directive to ease up the number of inmates in already crowded jails, Mizoram's High Power Committee under the Chairmanship of Gauhati High Court Judge Michael Zothankhuma has granted remission to 48 selected prisoners from the Central and district jails, who are near to completing their terms of imprisonment. Besides them, the High Power Committee has also released with PR Bond, 289 Under Trial Prisoners (first-time offenders), thus bringing the total number of 'freed' prisoners to 337.

The High Power Committee has also entrusted each District Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police with the charge of escorting the prisoners safely to their respective homes.
