Aizawl the 9th July, 2026: On 7 July 2026, Police received information that one Shri Lalbiakzuala of Thingsai, Hnahthial District, presently residing at Salem Veng, Aizawl and working as a subcontractor for the renovation of Chamdur-I Presbyterian Church, had allegedly been assaulted near Chamdur 'P', Lawngtlai District by a group of eight unidentified persons believed by the victim to be members of an armed group while returning after purchasing groceries from Bolisora. According to the victim, the group emerged from the jungle, frisked him, assaulted him with the butt of a rifle when he resisted, and took away five packets of locally made liquor and ₹600 in cash before fleeing. He further claimed that three of the alleged assailants were armed with an AK-type rifle, a 12-bore firearm, and a country-made gun.

Considering the seriousness and urgency of the matter and the difficult road conditions caused by continuous heavy rainfall, the victim was interviewed through a video call in the presence of local NGO leaders. During the interaction, he described the alleged assailants as wearing light green clothing, most of them wearing boots, having long hair, and repeatedly uttering the word "Shanti."At the request of the YMA, the victim underwent a medical examination at the Primary Health Centre. The attending Health Workers reported that he had no visible injuries, bruises, or abrasions and was found to be physically fit.

On 8 July 2026, the Officer-in-Charge and personnel of Vasei Police Station visited Chamdur 'P' and conducted a detailed enquiry. The alleged place of occurrence was inspected, the victim and several witnesses were examined, and all available leads were verified. During the enquiry, two individuals who had come under suspicion were questioned. Their alibis were found to be satisfactory, and no evidence was found linking them to the alleged incident.

The enquiry further revealed that the victim had earlier purchased locally made liquor through an intermediary from Bolisora. Witnesses confirmed this transaction. However, the victim's later claim that he had returned to Bolisora to purchase additional liquor was denied by the alleged sellers, who stated that they were working in the paddy fields at the relevant time and had not sold liquor to anyone. The statements of the witnesses examined during the enquiry did not support the victim's account and revealed significant inconsistencies. It was also learnt from a close relative that the victim is a habitual consumer of alcohol. During the enquiry, the victim did not fully cooperate with the Police and local NGOs and attempted to leave the area on two occasions.

Based on the enquiry conducted so far, the allegations made by the victim could not be substantiated. In view of the inconsistencies in his statements, the absence of any visible injuries, and the contradictory evidence collected during the enquiry, the alleged incident remains unverified at this stage. Police will continue to examine any fresh evidence or credible information that may emerge.
