Mizoram Range Assam Rifles, also called 23 Sector Assam Rifles celebrated its 51st anniversary of service on 10 Sep 2011. Mizoram Range / 23 Sector Assam rifles was raised at Silchar on 10 Sep 1960. Col J D Nadirshaw, VRC, SC was the first Deputy Inspector General of the Range. Assam Rifles units under command were deployed in states of Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. Immediately after the raising, the sector was assigned the task of providing aid to civil in dealing with law and order situation in Cachar during later part of 1960 and in early 1961. In 1962 during war against China, the range moved to Mokochung, Nagaland. In March 1966, when insurgency broke out on large scale in Mizo Hills the range moved to Aizawl on 21 Mar 1966. On formation of the Union Territory of Mizoram in March 1972, the range established its headquarters at Lunglawn / Lunglei during November 1972 in South Mizoram. Mizoram Range headquarters moved to its present location at Aizawl on 15 Sep 1978.

The Range and Assam Rifles battalions are maintaining vigil and border guarding the Indo – Myanmar border and are responsive to the needs and sensibilities of the Mizo people. Assam Rifles is always prepared to provide held to the government, civil administration and the hill people of Mizoram, correctly epitomizing the role & moto of Mizoram Range “Friends of the Hill People”.
