The 4th Meeting of Mizoram State Consumer Protection Council was held today at the  I&PR Conference Hall. The meeting was presided over by H. Rohluna, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA).

Speaking at the meeting, H. Rohluna said the awareness for consumer rights is developing rapidly among the masses. The Mizoram government is taking steps to ease the current problems in LPG, POL and essential commodities under Public Distribution System (PDS), he added.

The Mizoram State Consumer Protection Council Meeting 2010 reviewed and confirmed the minutes of the previous meeting in 2009. Rs. 2 lakhs each was distributed to every district for Consumer Awareness Campaign. Steps were taken to amalgamate Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology departments to create a separate Directorate of Consumer Affairs. Four (4) new Legal Metrology Inspectors were recruited and posted in various districts. Fund was alloted for the construction of one Secondary Standard Laboratory and four Working Standard Laboratories. 170 cases were filed out of which 165 cases were disposed off under the State Commission, 3651 cases were filed out of which 2581 cases were disposed off under the different District Forum. A State Consumer Helpline at phone number 2300488 was also set up in 2008.

The 4th Mizoram State Consumer Protection Council Meeting 2010 decided to reconstitute State level and District level Vigilance Committee on PDS under proper guidelines. The meeting also agreed to strengthen the Food Labeling Rules. Trainings and meeting of the District Forums with the FCS&CA Secretary was decided to strengthen the District Forums. A reward for consumer organizations, branches and individuals was also decided to boost consumer awareness. The accuracy of distribution of rations under AAY/BPL were to be verified by Legal Metrology staffs and FCS&CA officials. In areas where Legal Metrology staffs are not posted, LPG agents are to report their intake of LPGs to the Local Civil Administration. District Forums and District officials also gave reports on the status of District Forum buildings construction, utilization of equipments supplied for the District Forums by the Central Central government and the status of CONFONET scheme under NIC.

Zohmingthangi IAS, DC Lunglei, representatives of other DCs, government departments and NGOs, State and District Consumer Unions. K. Riachho IAS, Secretary FCS&CA gave the Vote of Thanks.
