Sports & Youth Services Minister Pu Robert Romawia Royte today announced that Mizoram is set to hold the first ever professional boxing event ‘WBC World Youth Title’ on 6th March this year at the R.Dengthuama Indoor Stadium, Aizawl. This will be a first not only for the state of Mizoram but the whole of Northeast, and will pave the way for promising boxers from Mizoram and the NE to enter and make a mark in the professional boxing arena both nationally and internationally. The event, fully recognised by the World Boxing Council, will be jointly organised by local Cable TV LPS Vision and Grassroots Boxing Promotion & Management, Kolkata and the main title fight will have rising Mizo boxer Lalrinsanga Tlau pitched against Ghana boxer Eric Quarm.

Speaking to the press in his office chamber this morning, Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte said that since Mizoram is the first state to declare sports as an ‘industry’, the government continues its all-out effort in promoting promising sportspersons in all disciplines and affording them a steady means of income besides the fame. Since promotion of Mizo boxers is a priority, the boxing event to be titled ‘LPS Fight Night’ will showcase promising Mizo boxers, who are ready to step into the professional ring, he added. The Sports Minister also said that it is their dream to make Mizoram the ‘boxing hub’ of the country and that from now on, the World Youth Title event will most probably be held yearly, inviting professional boxers from India and abroad.

LPS Vision Director Pu Lalswmliana Pachuau said that all the boxing matches in this one night event will be telecast through a new pay-per-view channel on LPS Cable TV and tickets will be sold for those who attend the event at the venue itself. Grassroots Boxing Promotion & Management Founder-President Pu Mujtaba Kamal said that Mizo boxers have a bright future ahead and that by holding the World Youth Title in Mizoram, they will be creating history for Mizoram and the Northeast. This will be only the second time that the title event is hosted on Indian soil.
