07.08.2023: National Handloom Day was celebrated at Mizoram along with the rest of the country. The National Handloom Day celebration function was held on 7th August 2023 at NIC Video Conference Halls at Kolasib and Aizawl. In the Aizawl programme organised by Weavers Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles, at NIC Centre, Aizawl, Minister for Sericulture Er. Lalrinawma graced the occasion in the presence of officials from departments of Sericulture and Commerce & Industries.

"National Handloom Day' has been celebrated on 7th August since the year 2015, The day was chosen, as the 'Swadeshi Movement' was launched on the 7th August 1905, which had encouraged indigenous industries particularly handloom weavers. The main purpose of the programme is to generate awareness about the handloom industry and its contribution in socio-economic development of the country, ultimately to increase the income of weavers.

Accordingly this is the 9th National Handloom Day celebration function, while the main function is celebrated at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi with participation of 3000 handloom & khadi weavers, artisans all over India with participation of Hon'ble Prime Minister, it is also celebrated in 75 places/clusters all over India with participation at 100 weavers at each cluster at NIC Centres, Inaugurated by local Ministers at respective places followed by online address & interaction with Prime Minister.

In Aizawl, during the function the welcome address was made by Dr.P.Vasu, Dy. Director of Weavers Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India followed by a speech by Pi Hunthianglimi, Dy Diretor (HTH), Commerce & Industries. While the benefits of Yarn Pass Book which helps the weavers to get yarn at concessional rates were explained by Pu Lalvensanga, Manager, NHDC, the weaver participants from Sailam cluster got distributed with Yarn Pass Books and Lighting units by Hon'ble Minister. The trainees deputed by Sericulture department who have undergone skill upgradation training under Samarth training programme in 'Dyeing' were awarded with certificates by Pu Zothansanga, Director Sericulture along with Hon'ble Minister.

At 12 noon, the address & interaction by the Prime Minister from Delhi was watched by the weaver participants at the Video Conference Hall of NIC. Lateron the weavers participated in the Quiz programme and the winners of the Quiz competition and Design competition were awarded with Prizes. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Pi Preetha.

The celebration function at Kolasib was held at IPR Conference Hall and inaugurated by Pu Lalmuan Puia, Project Director, DRD office, Kolasib.
