3. NEC Sanctioned Research Project to Combat Nutritional Anaemia in Mizoram.
The North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned a research project titled “Exploring Dietary Richness and Nutritive Parameters of Wild Edible Food and Traditional Recipes to Improve Health and Nutrition Among Anaemic Women of Mizoram” to the Department of Environmental Science, Mizoram University.
The first instalment of funds was released in May 2025 to initiate the project activities. The project has a duration of three years and is scheduled for completion in May 2028.
This initiative aims to address the prevalent issue of nutritional anaemia in Mizoram, which is largely attributed to poor dietary quality. The project will explore and compare the dietary patterns of anaemic and non-anaemic individuals—particularly women—to gain a deeper understanding of the link between nutrition and anaemia.
The study will focus on identifying iron- and vitamin-rich wild edible foods and traditional recipes commonly consumed in the region. It aims to generate comprehensive data on local dietary habits and the nutritional value of indigenous foods. By screening these foods for their iron and vitamin content, the research will offer evidence-based recommendations to help prevent anaemia and improve overall health outcomes.
Given Mizoram’s rich biodiversity and the abundance of traditional and wild foods, the project holds significant potential for promoting sustainable local dietary practices that enhance health and nutrition, especially among women.
