Lunglei the 30th March, 2023 – Polling for the much anticipated 1st General Election to Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) 2023 concluded successfully across 44 polling stations within Lunglei Municipality area yesterday. Citizens casted their votes for 11 LMC wards in the election which had 42 candidates from 4 parties viz Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People's Movement (ZPM).

Lunglei DC & District Municipal Election Officer Pi Ramdinliani, Lunglei SP Pu Rahul Alwal, Election Observers Dr Andrew H. Vanlaldika and Dr Lalngura Tlau, along with other officials oversaw the overall conduct of the election. Members of Young Mizo Association set up Voters' Help Desk at every polling station to assist voters.

The LMC Electoral Roll has 40,548 electors (male – 19,123, female – 21,425). A total of 30,111 votes (74.26%) were casted at the election.

The announcement for the 1st General Election to Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) 2023 was made by the State Election Commissioner Pu Laima Chozah, IAS (Rtd) on 02.03.2023 at Lunglei DC Conference Hall. Draw of Lots for determination of Reserved Seats for Women was done on the same day in the presence of political parties, NGOs and mediapersons. The Female Reserved Wards are Ward No II (Serkawn, Zohnuai); Ward No V (Rahsiveng, Sazaikawn, Hauruang); Ward No VIII (Ramthar, Farm Veng); Ward No X (Sethlun, Luangmual, Theiriat, Hrangchalkawn).

The proposal to set up a Municipal Council for Lunglei town was unanimously approved by the Mizoram Cabinet at its meeting on the 16th November, 2021. Gazette Notification – Intention to Constitute a Municipal area in Lunglei was then issued by the Government of Mizoram on the 24th November, 2021, with 24 localities identified in the schedule to be included in the Lunglei municipal area. Budget allocation of Rs. 80 lakhs for FY 2021-22 was made towards setting up the LMC, with an office space set up within the Convention Centre building. The Government had also issued a Notification dated 24th January, 2022 for creation of CEO, Secretary, Superintendent, Finance & Accounts Officer & Assistant posts under LMC.
