The Growing Threat of AMR
AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites become resistant to the medicines we use to treat infections. As we observe World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) from November 18 to 24, I call on all of us in Mizoram to recognize the urgent need for collective action in addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This year's theme, "Educate. Advocate. Act now", serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to educate ourselves and others about AMR, advocate for stronger commitments, and act without delay to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections.
The AMR Situation in Mizoram
In Mizoram, we are detecting infections due to multidrug-resistant bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus in Humans and E. coli and Salmonella are showing resistance to antibiotics in livestock and poultry.
Government Efforts to Combat AMR
To tackle the growing menace of AMR, the National Program on AMR Containment was launched by the Government of India in 2013 during its 12th five-year plan. The Mizoram government is fully committed to tackling AMR through a series of key initiatives like workshops on AMR awareness and Surveillance for the healthcare and veterinary sectors. Public awareness campaigns are underway to educate healthcare professionals, animal health workers, and the general public about the responsible use of antibiotics.
How You Can Help Prevent AMR
Preventing AMR is a responsibility we all share. Here's what you can do:
* Use Antibiotics only when prescribed and never self-medicate or use leftover antibiotics, c Always complete your prescribed treatment.
* Wash your hands regularly, prepare food safely, and follow healthy behaviors.
* Vaccines help prevent infections and reduce the need for antibiotics.
Moving Forward Together
This AMR Awareness Week provides an important opportunity for us to come together and take meaningful action. Through stronger awareness, better regulation, and active community engagement, we can make Mizoram a model for AMR control in India.
Let us pledge to uphold the slogan of World Antimicrobial Resistance Week — "Educate. Advocate. Act now." Together, we renew our commitment to building a safer, healthier future for all.
