Lunglei, 26th March 2025: In compliance with directives from the Department of Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities – Regional Centre, Aizawl, in collaboration with the District Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs Office, Lunglei, and the District Project Office, Samagra Shiksha, Lunglei, organised a "Purple Fair for Persons with Disabilities" at the Government High School Ground in Lunglei today.
The Purple Fair provided a platform for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), also known as Divyangjan, to showcase their art and crafts, promote their entrepreneurial ventures through stalls, display their talents in cultural performances, and participate in sports and games. The event aimed to promote inclusivity and raise awareness about disability issues.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Pu V. Malsawmtluanga, MLA and Vice Chairman of the High Powered Committee, Lunglei, as the Chief Guest. Pi K. Lalrintluangi, District Project Coordinator of Samagra Shiksha, Lunglei, chaired the function, while Rev. Israel Lalremtluanga, Director of Baptist Masihi Mission, offered a devotional address. Other dignitaries present included Pi Sarju Moirangthem, Officer-in-Charge of NILD RC-Aizawl, Pu CL Joseph, Lunglei District Social & Tribal Welfare Affairs Officer, and several other officials.
The event featured five stalls showcasing products from PwD entrepreneurs, including representatives from Onyx Special School, Lunglei; TNT Home, Lunglei; Training Centre for Specially Abled Persons, Lunglei; and ALIMCO, PMDK, Aizawl. These stalls displayed various handicrafts and products created by PwDs and included an exhibition of their artworks.
The cultural programme highlighted the talents of PwDs, with performances including solo and group singing, dance, recitation, traditional cultural dances such as chheih lam, and a fashion show featuring PwDs.
Additionally, a series of sports events were held for PwDs, including wheelchair races, blindfolded challenges, tug of war, spoon races, disposable cup challenges, and a chips matching challenge.
On the occasion, ALIMCO, PMDK, Aizawl, distributed aids and appliances to 22 PwD beneficiaries under the Assistance for Disabled Persons (ADIP) Scheme and provided support to 12 senior citizens (aged 60 and above) under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY).
