Aizawl the 23rd August, 2023 : A railway bridge (bridge no. 196 near Sairang zero point) which was under construction collapsed near Sairang village in Mizoram on the 23rd ofAugust, 2023 at around 9.30 am. The construction site is about 21 km from Aizawl.
Following the tragic incident, the rescue and relief operations began immediately. DC and SP Aizawl reached the site immediately. Officials of district administration and Police department, alongwith local officials started the rescue operation. The QRT and NDRF also reached the site immediately and started the rescue and recovery operation. 18 dead bodies have been recovered so far, and 3 injured persons were rescued, while search and rescue operations are going on. Medical teams from Civil Hospital, Lengpui and Sairang PHC provided medical aid. The YMA is also playing a crucial part in the rescue operation.
The QRT team along with NDRF has rescued one injured worker from the top of one of the bridge pillars. Two QRT officials namely Lalhriatzuala and Lalfakzuala brought down the injured worker rappeling down the 100m high pillar.
Post mortem is being conducted by team from ZMC and Civil Hospital, Aizawl. The bodies will be embalmed and will be handed over to the railway department for transportation to respective home villages.
The Hon’ble Minister DM&R, Pu Lalchamliana has expressed his deep regret for this incident and offers his condolences to the victims and their families.

Laldawngliana, Tuirial MLA; Pu Zothantluanga, MLA, Aizawl West-I, Chief Secretary; DGP; Commissioner & Secretary, Home; Commissioner & Secretary, Transport; Director transport: DMR Director and other officials also visited the site.
Rescue operations are still underway in coordination with BSF, NDRF and Police. All possible assistance is being provided at the site.
