Aizawl 25th February, 2022: A sensitization meeting to discuss the setting up of Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) was held at Lunglei Convention Centre Conference Hall yesterday. The discussions were led by top UD&PA Deparment officials including Director Pu H. Lianzela, Jt Secretary Dr Lalngura Tlau as well as AMC Joint Municipal Commissioner Pu H. Lalhmingthanga. Special invitees including members of Lunglei MJA, Sub Hqrs YMA, MUP, Chhimbial Chhantu & concerned Lunglei District officials attended the meeting.
Intended as an educational and consultative session with key stakeholders, the meeting discussed and deliberated on various issues such as delimitation of local council areas, setting up of office, conduct of elections, and key concerns raised by the general public regarding MGNREGA, payment of taxes etc. The experience and practices of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation with regards to Property Tax, Licensing, Hoarding, parking, solid waste management, building permits etc were also studied in the meeting. The UD&PA officials also underlined the fact that setting up the LMC will lead to much more effective implementation of key schemes under the Department such as HFA/PMAY (U), DAY-NULM, SBM (U), AMRUT, PAHOSS.
The proposal to set up a municipal council for Lunglei town was unanimously approved by the Mizoram Cabinet at its meeting on the 16th November, 2021. Gazette Notification – Intention to Constitute a Municipal area in Lunglei was then issued by the Government of Mizoram on the 24th November, 2021, with 24 localities identified in the schedule to be included in the Lunglei municipal area. Budget allocation of Rs. 80 lakhs for FY 2021-22 has been made towards setting up the LMC, with an office space identified within the Convention Centre building. The Government has also issued a Notification dated 24th January, 2022 for creation of CEO, Secretary, Superintendent, Finance & Accounts Officer & Assistant posts under LMC. Lunglei Notified Town has a population of 57,011 of which 29,474 are males while 27,537 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.
