Aizawl, 13th December, 2024: The State Institute for Transformation (SIT), Mizoram in collaboration with Mizoram University, jointly organized One Day Workshop on "Moving Towards Green and Net-Zero Building Practices" today at Conference Hall, Planning & Programme Implementation Department (RDB), Opposite Raj Bhavan, Treasury Square. Aizawl. Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University was the Chief Guest for the inaugural programme. 

Dr. Lalrinchhana, Principal Adviser-cum-additional Secretary, P&PID commenced the workshop with an opening speech wherein he emphasized the need to understand and practice green and net zero building practices to achieve green economy and a safe future in the state. This was followed by a context setting of the workshop from C. Lalruatsanga, Team Lead, PIME of State Institute for Transformation, P&PID who highlighted the agendas and objectives of the programme. He stressed upon the importance of incorporating the traditional practices, ensuring efficient energy consumption and achieving economic returns through green and net zero building practices. 

To formally inaugurate the programme, the Chief Guest of the workshop gave a keynote address applauding the organizers for establishing a coordination between Govt. of Mizoram and Mizoram University through this initiative. He urged the experts and participants to focus more on adoption of technologies which could achieve zero carbon emissions, ensure energy efficiency and promote cost-effective usage of solar energy in an affordable manner. He further suggested to incorporate sustainable housing & building practices in urban development by integrating existing traditional practices with innovative solutions that are discovered within the state.

The event featured interactive sessions led by industry experts, academicians, and policymakers, focusing on key themes such as:

(i) Green Building Concepts and Design Principles.

(ii) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Integration.

- Dr. Lalsangzela Sailo, Mizoram University

(iii) Water Conservation and Sustainable Management.

- Ruby Lalremruati, PHED

(iv) Incorporating Local Cultural Identity into Green Architecture.

- Angela Laltlanfeli, MIDF

(v) Policy Frameworks for Transitioning Towards Green and Net-Zero Energy Buildings.

- Ar. Francis L. Khiangte, MAF 

The objective of organizing this workshop comes in light of the growing interest within Mizoram in adopting sustainable building practices, including green and net-zero energy concepts, as part of the state's commitment to mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development. 

The workshop aims to introduce stakeholders from various sectors to innovative practices and create a foundation for incorporating these principles into upcoming projects in Mizoram as this initiative aligns with India's vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

As significant number of building projects are currently being developed in the state, incorporating green and net-zero principles into these projects will set a benchmark for sustainable practices, not only at the state level but also nationally. The outcomes of this workshop will pave the way for policy makers and stakeholders to enhance infrastructural projects with the knowledge and tools required to implement sustainable practices effectively. 

The workshop on Moving Towards Green and Net-Zero Building Practices concludes with sharing of suggestion and actionable points from the experts and participants based on the outcomes of the workshop and ended with a Vote of Thanks from the organizing team.
