‘‘Together we can create a safer, healthier and drug-free community.’’

In commemorating the country’s 78th Independence day the Excise & Narcotics Department, Government of Mizoram successfully organised a “Walkathon - Walk against drugs’’ on 14th August, 2024 at 06:30 am. The theme of the walkathon was - ‘Together we can create a safer, healthier and drug-free community.’ 

Pu Z Lalhmangaiha the chairman of the programme and Commissioner of Excise & Narcotics welcomed all the participants and stated that it is clearly evident that Mizoram is at war against drug and its abuse and menace have reached every nook and corner of the State. He said that however even though many youth have abused drugs in our society today there is a ray of hope if we join hands and work together in our fight against drugs we could reached our goal of having a drug free State in the future. He also requested all the youths to set an example amongst their peers and family in creating a safer and drug free society.

The chief guest, Hon’ble Minister of State Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar began his speech by stating various important reasons that resulted in India’s Independence from the Bristish rule. He mentioned that there were leaders and people from various sections of society who render their efforts endlessly in fighting the oppression of the British colonial regime in which many lost their jobs, their career and some even lost their lives. Their sacrifices freed all Indians from the British and today we are able to celebrate this Independence day because of them. He further stated that like the freedom fighters of this nation we can also be a freedom fighter on our fight against drugs and that together we can make our State a drug free society. He also thank the CYMA Kumpuan Committee who selflessly and voluntarilty works to create a a drug-free community by availing themselves 24x7 and menioned that their efforts contributes to the state positively in various aspect.

The Hon’ble Minister of State concluded his speech by urging all the participants to individually fight their own fight against drugs and he ask them to celebrate this 78th Independence day having the spirit of a freedom fighters fighting against drugs. The Chief guest then flagged off ‘The walk against drugs’ from Vanapa Hall, Aizawl.

The “Walk against Drugs” ended at Millennium Centre, Aizawl where Pu Lalramsanga Sailo, IRS, Secretary to the Government Mizoram, Excise & Narcotics Department explained to the participants the meaning of the theme “Together we can create a safer, healthier and drug-free community.’’ He also further explained the scope of ‘Ruihtheih thil’ (Psychoactive Substance) and highlighted that those substance may be in different forms and they maybe consume in liquid, solid or gases form of substances. He also pointed out that recent research conducted amongst different student of Mizoram have shown that students knows amongst their peers that out of 100 students ,approximately 53 of them were already indulge with at least one or more Psychoactive Substances. The Secretary requested all the student participants to frequently check the official site of the department and instagram page so as to keep them updated with the development and undertaking of the Excise & Narcotics department as they are “The Ambassadors of the department on war against drugs,”

Pu Peter Zohmingthanga, Joint Commissioner (Enf) of Excise & Narcotics administered a pledge against drugs. 

The event witnessed the participation of Students from various schools, Senior officers and Staffs of Excise & Narcotics department and members of CYMA Kumpuan committee which totals to a number of 332 participants.
