- Dignitaries, participants, dear friends
25th January has been observed as the National Voters’ Day since 2011. The Election Commission of India was established on this day in 1950.
The whole nation is commemorating this occasion, and it is my privilege to participate in this observance.
Today, our country’s credibility as the largest and most successful democratic Nation is recognized worldwide. Since Independence, free and fair elections have been held at regular intervals as per the principles enshrined in the Constitution, Electoral Laws and System.
The Election Commission of India, which is one of the pillars of Indian democracy, has demonstrated exemplary commitment to strengthening democratic values in tune with the changing times.
It has always risen to the challenge of conducting the enormous exercise of voting in the country.
It has always risen to the challenges of conducting the biggest exercise of voting as well as in conducting free and fair elections in the country.
The Election Commission has withstood the test of time and has successfully set the rules of the game which provide a level playing field for all.
The use of Electronic Voting Machines for conducting elections even in remote rural areas was a bold experiment which has been applauded across the world.
Today, we are a thriving democracy and the envy of neighboring countries, which are in political turmoil and disturbances.
The spirit of vibrant democracy is demonstrated in the recently concluded General Election to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, which saw a high voter turnout of 82.26%.
I applaud the concerted efforts of the officials, the religious bodies and the civil society for ensuring a peaceful and successful General Election.
However, sadly, the following officials lost their lives while performing their duties during the election process.
- Shri Z.Lalmuanzuala of 4th IR Battalion
- Shri Lalfakawma of 2nd IR Battalion
- Shri C.Zonunsanga, Aadhar Operator, DC Office, Serchhip
- Shri Rajpal Singh of 156 Bn CRPF
I pay my sincere respects to these individuals on this solemn occasion.
The main purpose of the National Voters’ Day is to spread awareness among voters for promoting informed participation in electoral process.
The theme for this year is ‘Nothing like voting, I vote for sure’. This is especially relevant in view of the upcoming General Election to Lok Sabha.
I call upon all voters in the state to participate enthusiastically in this year’s General Election.
In conclusion, I appeal to all the people of Mizoram to strive hard towards strengthening democratic traditions by being involved in the electoral process, remembering that individuals can influence government decision making through voting.
Thank you.
Jai Hind.
