The general election to village councils under the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) and by-election for one vacant seat in Council Veng VC under Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) were conducted successfully yesterday the 13th March.
There are 88 village councils within the Chakma Autonomous District Council comprising 516 seats in which 428 are general seats and 88 are reserved seats for women. There were 972 candidates and 32,213 voters. For filling up of one vacant seat in Council Veng VC under LADC, there were 2 candidates and 1,298 voters.
In 6 of the 88 VCs under CADC, namely, 59-Dursora, 60-Chhotaguisury-I, 61-Chhotaguisury-II, 66-Gerasury, 67-Ludisora and 88-Silbanga, all the candidates were declared uncontested winners. Polling for the remaining 82 VCs under CADC and Council Veng VC constituency under LADC commenced at 7 in the morning and closed at 4 in the evening, except for 8 constituencies where time for polling was extended as per rules. Counting commenced right after the poll was closed.
Voter turnout in 82 polling stations under CADC was 26,915 out of 31,112 total voters, which was 86.51%. Voter turnout in Council Veng VC under LADC was 808 out of 1,298 total voters, which was 62.25%.
Out of 516 seats in 88 VCs under CADC, the Mizo National Front (MNF) secured 372 seats and won in 65 VCs, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 115 seats and won in 16 VCs, Independent candidates secured 27 seats and won in 3 VCs, the Indian National Congress (INC) secured 2 seats and there were 4 no majority villages.
In the Council Veng VC by-election under LADC, an MNF candidate Vanlalduhenga was elected.
The elected members should form an executive body before 17th March and all election process should be completed on 18th March as per the schedule of the State Election Commission.
