Dated Aizawl the 22nd April, 2025 : Today, The Meteorological Centre, Aizawl, Mizoram, proudly joined the global community in celebrating Earth Day 2025 under the theme “Our Power our planet”. The event, held at the Centre’s premises, schools aimed to raise awareness about environmental protection, promote sustainable practices, and highlight the critical role of meteorological services in climate resilience.
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally through earth day.
Activities:
India Meteorological Department (IMD) is celebrating the Earth Day 2025 with a series of activities throughout the country. In this regard, under the leadership of Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra Director General Meteorology IMD the following activities held at Meteorological Centre Aizawl Mizoram.
- Earth Day pledge, to make this world a greener, more sustainable place to live and protect the future of the planet.
- Play card Competition for school children for Earth Day theme.
- Presentation to Green Field school Kids at Meteorological Centre Aizawl in that addresses all the aspects relating the Earth System Science for providing weather, climate, ocean, coastal state, hydrological and seismological services. The services include forecasts and warnings for various natural disasters like tropical cyclones, storm surge, floods, heat waves, thunderstorm and lightning; alerts for Tsunamis and monitoring of earthquakes etc. In addition, the ministry also has the mandate of making ocean survey and exploration for living and non-living resources and exploration of all the three poles (Arctic, Antarctic and Himalayas).
- Field Visit of Surface observatory and Upper Observation of School students organized at Meteorological Centre Aizawl.
- Painting competition at TL English School organized at Aizawl.
- Plantation Drive at Meteorological Centre Aizawl Premises.
- Human Chain for Earth Day Theme with Play Card organized at Meteorological Centre Aizawl.
- Prize Distribution to the students.
Shri Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Director of the Met Centre Aizawl, delivered an inspiring address, focusing on the regional importance of IMD’s services in northeastern India. Dwivedi shared insights into how the IMD’s regional centres, particularly in the northeast, have played a key role in monitoring and forecasting weather patterns, often challenging due to the complex topography and climate conditions of the region. He also said that we are working for IMD’s capabilities growth, and now, with the strength of digital tools, advanced forecasting, and satellite monitoring, it is paving the way for a brighter future.
The event saw the presence of several senior government officials from Mizoram Science Centre, School Principal, Teachers, Trainers. All the officials of meteorological centre Aizawl Mr. Avinash Misra, Mr. Adarsh Kumar, Mr. Deepak Kumar Ray, Mr. Rejoy Dungdung,, Mr. Ashutosh Kumar, Mr. Ravi Prakash, Jitesh Kumar, and Mr. Samdarshi Kumar has done a great work in organising the event.
