Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Shri Nihar Kanti Chakma inaugurated today "Workshop on Mainstreaming of Disaster Management into Development Process" at Vanapa Hall. The workshop was organised by Disaster Management Authority, Govt. of India and Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, Govt. of Mizoram.
Speaking at the inaugural function, The DM&R Minister said calamities in different forms happen every year in Mizoram. The State government is happy to learn the Govt. of India's approach in disaster mangement, he added. He further requested the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to continue sending experts for the successful implementation of disaster management programmes in Mizoram. The Minister invited all the participants of the workshop to make Mizoram more disaster resilient.
Mizoram Chief Secretary Van Hela Pachuau delivered Welcome Speech and said there is no substitute to preparedness when it come to natural disasters. Mr. Amit Jha, Joint Secretary, NDMA gave the Keynote Address. Experts from Ministry of Earth Sciences, UNDP, NDMA, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and DM&R, Mizoram gave presentations in this workshop.
According to the DM&R records, various disasters such as landslide, fire, cyclone, hailstorm, flood and other accidents damaged 42323 houses and 87 lives were lost between 2004 - 2010 in Mizoram. Mizoram is within the Seismic Zone V and is a very high cyclone risk zone. Mizoram government had set up Disaster Management Cell (ATI), Hazard Safety Cell (PWD), State Disaster Response Force and Disaster Management Committies at various levels as well as organizing various Awareness campaigns to prepare its citizens.
