Aizawl, the 9th December 2020 : Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs Minister Dr. K. Beichhua today inaugurated the newly upgraded and strengthened Self Employed Tailoring Unit and Computer & Desktop Publishing Unit at the State Social Welfare & Rehabilitation Centre located at Hunthar Veng. These units were strengthened with funds provided by Oil India Limited under their CSR initiative.
Dr. K. Beichhua said that everyone in their lives faces problems and hardships and we all need introspection in our lives. He advised the inmates of the Centre not to dwell on their past lives and misfortunes but to move ahead with hope and make the best use of skill development training that are being imparted at the Centre. He hoped that such training would ensure that they get livelihood avenues once they are discharged from the Centre. The Minister said that under the state's flagship programme – SEDP, social security was a core focus area and rehabilitation of target groups is a priority for the government, he added.
The inauguration function was chaired by Commissioner & Secretary, Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs Pu H.L. Rochungnunga. Dr. R. Lalnunmawii, Superintendent of the Centre highlighted the functioning and activities of the Centre towards the welfare of the inmates.
OIL provided funds to the tune of Rs. 11 lakhs in terms of machines and equipment for the strengthening project.
The State Social Welfare & Rehabilitation Centre was earlier known as Protective Home and it is the state's lone rehabilitation centre for women. Since its inception more than 902 women have been cared for and rehabilitated. Under the Skill Development Unit, tailoring, weaving, beauty culture and computer courses are being run for the inmates. The Centre presently has 60 inmates.
