Dated Aizawl, the 22nd May, 2025: The International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 was celebrated today with the theme, ‘Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development’. In Mizoram, the main event was organized at the ATI Auditorium, MINECO, Aizawl by Mizoram State Biodiversity Board and National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) where Mr. Lalthansanga, Environment, Forests & Climate Change (EF&CC) Minister was the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lalthansanga said that economic growth and environmental conservation must go together and that we must protect biological diversity as the foundation of our future, not just as a mere duty. The Minister also said that conservation must be kept a priority keeping in mind new risks that are emerging with the changing times.

The welcome speech was given by the Chairman, Mr. R.K. Tiwari IFS, PCCF Mizoram. Mr. H. Lalengmawia IAS, Commissioner & Secretary i/e EF&CC Department, Government of Mizoram and Chairman, Mizoram State Biodiversity Board gave the Keynote Address, and Mr. M.Z. Singson IFS, Member Secretary, MSBB gave the Technical Report. Presentations on the theme were given by Ms. Shikha Sinha, NBA Intern and Mr. Vanlalhrima, BIOCONE. The event was attended by invitees from government departments, BMC Members, students, and representatives from Environmental NGOs.

The Mizoram State Biodiversity Board had organised High School Level Painting Competition, Open Photography Competition and Signboard Design Competition for Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) to mark the occasion. Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest to the following participants:

High School Level Painting Competition 

1st  Prize: Layla Zothanpari, St. Paul’s Higher St. Pauls Higher Secondary School 

2nd Prize: Jayaditya Chowdhury, St. Paul’s Higher St. Pauls Higher Secondary School 

3rd Prize: R.Lalpekhlui, Living Water School 

Consolation prizes with Citation were presented to five others. 

Open Photography Competition 

1st  Prize: Paul Lalrambeiseia, Zonuam, Aizawl 

2nd Prize: Tlauliana, Kulikawn, Aizawl 

3rd Prize: Lalrinnungi, Bethlehem Vengthlang 

Consolation prizes with Citation were presented to three others. 

BMC (Biodiversity Management Committee) Signboard Design Competition 

1st  Prize: Thanglailung BMC 

2nd Prize: N. Lungleng BMC 

3rd Prize: Sialsir BMC

The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was established in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to work towards the conservation of biological diversity. India is also party to this Convention and is among the 196 countries that have signed the Agreement. The UN has been celebrating 22nd May as 'International Day for Biological Diversity’ since 2000 in commemoration of this Convention.
