Aizawl, the 19th July 2024: Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati had a review meeting of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Engineers on the Progress of the Bairabi – Sairang New Line Project (51.38 Km) at the Raj Bhavan, today. 

On behalf of the NFR, Shri Vinod Kumar, Chief Engineer, NFR (Construction) assisted by Shri Harjimal Meena, Dy CE, NFR, Aizawl presented the updates on the railway construction project which will bring the goods and passenger services to the doorstep of Aizawl City, Mizoram.
After going through the presentation, Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati thanked the Central Government and Indian Railways for bringing and completing a game changer project for the state of Mizoram. He also congratulated the people of Mizoram on the verge of finally availing the critical services of railways that will ensure substantial cost cutting on transportation of passengers and commodities in addition to reducing the travelling time between the state and its neighbouring state of Assam, at least by 3 to 4 hours. He also spoke about how the cheaper services of the railway will have a domino effect on all other developmental activities within the state.
As presented in the report, the latest and revised cost of the project is Rs 8213.72 Crores with 93% of the physical works being completed at this point. There are four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. The 51.38 Km new line between Bairabi and Sairang is divided into four sections: - Bairabi – Hortoki, Hortoki – Kawnpui, Kawnpui – Mualkhang, and Mualkhang – Sairang. 
Since the NFR has successfully done a trial run on the Bairabi – Hortoki section, the Hortoki Station is tentative to be inaugurated within the next few days along with the commissioning of railways services up to Hortoki in Mizoram. Within the next few months, the railway services along the Hortoki – Kawnpui section and then to the Kawnpui – Mualkhang section would also be commissioned. By the end of July 2025, the NFR planned to finally inaugurate the Sairang Terminal Station and commission railway services to the doorstep of Aizawl.
