Aizawl, the 21st March 2023: Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati visited the Zoram Medical College(ZMC) at Falkawn Village today. The ZMC, the only medical college existing in the state is presently funded, run, and operated by a society formed under the Government of Mizoram. The institute is affiliated with Mizoram University and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati was received on the spot by Pi Esther Lal Ruatkimi, Principal Secretary, H&FW, Dr. John Zohmingthanga, Director, ZMC, Dr. Jane R Ralte, Registrar, and other faculty of the institute. On his arrival, Governor quickly inspected some wards and one of the state-of-the-art Operation Theatres at the Hospital block.

Governor was then invited to inspect the academic block to inspect the existing facilities and interacts with the MBBS students. Afterward, an interactive meeting of the faculties and the Governor was held at the Council Room. Before the interaction, Governor was apprised with a brief history of the ZMC, its progress, and the undergoing initiative of the institute to achieve its aspirations for recognition by the NMC.

During his interaction with the ZMC faculties, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and determination of the authorities entrusted at ZMC for laying almost all the groundwork required for getting recognition by the NMC. He advised the Principal Secretary and the Director of ZMC to coordinate with all the HODs at ZMC to come up with good proposals for improving the medical equipment and the high-end apparatuses in each department. He also advised them to design a mechanism by which the medical students will have very helpful exposure to the day-to-day operations at the Civil Hospital, Aizawl. On the requirements of setting up critical infrastructures to meet NMC criteria, Governor suggested pulling funds through CSR from the big PSUs.

The ZMC has an annual intake capacity of 100 students. Seats at the ZMC are filled based on the quota system of 70% state quota, 15%All India Quota(NEET), and 15% NRI Quota. Currently, there are 488 MBBS students in the college - 218 male and 270 female students. After completing the internship and house, the first batch of the college will pass out in 2024. Out of 698 staff in the college, 144 are the faculties and 554 are the non-teaching staff. It has 225 numbers of residential quarters on the campus.

The facilities at the attached hospital of ZMC is now vastly improved. It continues to provide 24x7 service with available transportation facilities to and fro Aizawl City and the surrounding villages. At present, there are 38 ICU beds, another 470 beds for patients, 7(+3) Major Operation Theatres (OT), 2(+4) Minor OT and 20 beds in Casualty. The attached Hospital has 3 nos of Oxygen plants with the total capacity of 1500 LPM - PSA. ZMC is also running 3 research units - Model Rural Health Research Unit, Viral Residential Diagnosis Lab and Multi Disciplinary Research Unit.
