The Governor Lt. Gen. (Rtd) M M Lakhera PVSM, AVSM, VSM yesterday evening, inaugurated the 'Third National Continuing Medical Education Programme' with the theme 'Glaucoma & Cataract Amongst Unreached Population' at the Tourist Lodge in Chaltlang. The Continuing Medical Education programme cum Workshop spread over three days(23rd - 25th May) is being organized for the first time in Mizoram by the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACON) and is being supported by the Mizoram State Health Society (Blindness).

Welcoming the delegates to the island of peace in the North East, the Governor said that Mizoram is one of the most peaceful states and the perception that people have of the North East that it is not safe is just a fallacy. He added that such programmes besides benefiting the delegates professionally also give them an insight into remote parts of the country and helps promote better understanding between people.

Quoting the Charak Samhita, the Governor spoke about the contributions of scientists of ancient India such as Charak and Susruta and stressed upon the need to look back and take what is good from the ancient texts while taking the best of the West. The Governor said that while India is being favoured as a medical destination by people given the recent advances in science and technology, it is a challenge for the medical fraternity to provide better and affordable healthcare to vast sections of the population who are till today outside the ambit of proper medical care.

On the occasion, the Governor also presented mementos to doctors, ophthalmic technicians and a nurse for doing pioneering in eye care in Mizoram. The inaugural function was chaired by Dr. Sopan K Somanta and the august gathering of ophthalmologists had the presence of renowed eye specialists from around the country. President Elect of ACON Col. Prof. Madan Deshpande spoke about the need to have a Glaucoma Care Center in the state and that to assess the status of glaucoma in Mizoram on the last day of the programme a Pilot Survey Camp cum Field Study would be organized he added.
