Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter's residence, yesterday forenoon. In this meeting, Governor Pillai had formally submitted a memorandum containing the application for setting up of AIIMS in Mizoram.
During this meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Governor Pillai had a long discussion on important issues pertaining to the state of Mizoram. One of the main issues being discussed was the Health Sector. The Prime Minister was enlightened on key issues in the Health Sectors within Mizoram with the special highlights on HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Malaria, Heart Attacks/Neurological problems, etc. On the health sector, Governor suggested to the Prime Minister that the Health Sector in Mizoram leaves a lot to be desired. And he also stressed that Health Infrastructure in Mizoram is still under-developed, with basic amenities unavailable even at the District Headquarters. Prime Minister was also informed that even in the state capital the hospitals do not have adequate medical infrastructures for treatment of some critically ill patients and that the serious patients, most of the time, are needed to be shipped out of the state incurring huge expenditures.
After a long discussion on health issues in Mizoram, Governor Pillai had formally proposed with a memorandum to Prime Minister for setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) or at least AIIMS - like Super Speciality facility in Mizoram. Governor Pillai also added that setting up of AIIMS or AIIMS-like Facility in Mizoram is the only way for easy access to affordable medical care and expert treatment.
