Mizoram witnessed a significant milestone on 17th January, 2020, when the Central Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education communicated its ‘in principle’ approval for the establishment of a campus of Mizoram University at the southern part of Mizoram at Lunglei town. MZU Southern Campus, as it is colloquially called, has long been a cherished dream of the people of Mizoram, especially those residing in the southern Districts of the state, and much effort has been put in towards its fruition from all sections of the society, including Government leaders, officials, NGO leaders and student groups.
A grand function to celebrate the MZU Southern Campus was held on 10th February, 2020 (Monday) at the Convention Center, Lunglei. Higher and Technical Education Minister Dr R. Lalthangliana was the Chief Guest while Pu C.Lalrinsanga, Agriculture Minister was the Guest of Honour. Pu Lawmawma Tochhawng, Vice Chairman High Powered Committee, Lunglei chaired the function. Also in attendance were Lunglei South AC MLA Dr K.Pachhunga, H&TE and MZU officials, Heads of Offices of Lunglei District, College Principals and lecturers, NGO leaders, media persons, student group leaders and prominent citizens of the town.
Addressing the gathering, Higher and Technical Education Minister Dr R. Lalthangliana congratulated the people of Mizoram on realizing their long awaited dream of establishing an institution of higher learning in Southern Mizoram. Taking care to acknowledge all the hard work and efforts put in by officials, NGO leaders, student leaders and previous Government leaders, he thanked them for their dedication, and sought their continued support in establishing the campus. He also stated that the Pukpui Engineering College would serve as a temporary campus, and that a sum of Rs. 11 crores has been earmarked for renovation of the temporary campus. The permanent campus would also be established in Pukpui, a locality in the northern part of Lunglei town.
As per the terms laid out by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, the land for the new campus is required to be provided by the State Government free of cost and necessary funds for creation of infrastructure are to be arranged by the University under Window III of Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) Scheme. HEFA is a joint venture of MHRD Government of India and Canara Bank for financing creation of capital assets in premier educational institutions in India.
To expedite the setting up on MZU Southern Campus, MYC Chairman Dr Vanlaltanpuia, under whose constituency the proposed Pukpui campus falls, visited Mausep, Pukpui today with MZU officials, Lunglei NGO Coordination leaders and Village Council members of Pukpui. The Village Council of Pukpui has agreed to donate land for development of the MZU Southern Campus at Mausep, Pukpui. As per their estimations, the land has an area exceeding 300 acres. This, however, has to be officially confirmed after measurement by the surveyors of the Land Revenue and Settlement Department. The team inspected both the proposed location and the designated temporary campus ie Pukpui Engineering College, and made necessary arrangements with the Village Council leaders and officials of Land Revenue and Settlement Department to work on formalities regarding the land.
