113/2026-2027

Dated Aizawl, May 26, 2026: Health and Family Welfare Minister Pi Lalrinpuii graced the "Graduation Day" organized for this year’s graduating MBBS students at the Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H). She also inaugurated an Interventional CT Scan, which is the first of its kind in Mizoram. Adviser to the Chief Minister (Finance) Pu TBC Lalvenchhunga and Higher and Technical Education Director Pu Laltanpuia were also present at the event.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the Graduation Day ceremony held at Lecture Hall-4, Academic Block, ZMC&H, Pi Lalrinpuii congratulated the new graduates for successfully passing their exams despite having started their studies during the Covid-19 pandemic. She expressed her optimism that they would help bridge the gap in the state's shortage of doctors to a certain extent. She highlighted that the Government of Mizoram had made every effort to facilitate their MBBS education by employing quality teachers and covering their study fees. Therefore, she urged them not to run away when Mizoram needs their expertise and to fully honor the bond (agreement) that they had signed. The students had signed this bond before beginning their coursework, agreeing to work under the Government of Mizoram for two (2) years after completing their studies.

The Health Minister further encouraged the new graduates to prioritize subjects that Mizoram desparately needs—such as Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology—if they decide to pursue higher studies. She noted that continuous efforts are being made under the Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS) to ensure better and more accessible healthcare for the public, adding that it is a proud moment to have an Interventional CT Scan inaugurated in Mizoram for the first time.

Guest of Honour Pu TBC Lalvenchhunga expressed his appreciation for the hard work put in by previous governments to make a medical college in Mizoram a reality. He advised the new graduates to treat patients with empathy and to carry out their duties as doctors with a spirit of selfless service.

Dr. Lily Chhakchhuak, Project Director of the Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project (MHSSP), spoke about the newly inaugurated Interventional CT Scan. She explained that the u-CT 780 Model, 128-Slice CT Scanner System is an initiative under MHSSP, costing Rs. 8.18 crores, and is backed by funding from the World Bank. This CT Scan utilizes AI (Artificial Intelligence) and is designed to provide clearer images while emitting less radiation, making it particularly beneficial for cardiac patients, children, and cancer treatment. The machine has been installed in the Department of Radiodiagnosis. She also mentioned that under the MHSSP, CT Scan machines have already been placed in the Champhai and Siaha districts.

ZMC&H was established on August 7, 2018 and Post-Graduate (PG) studies commenced last year, with two seats available in each of five (5) departments: Anaesthesiology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics, currently enrolling nine (9) students. Additionally, there are eight (8) students currently pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH).

The new graduates belong to the third batch, having started their studies in February 2021. Out of the 98 students who appeared for the final exams, 96 successfully graduated, resulting in a pass percentage of 97.95%. Prizes were awarded to outstanding students, with Alex Vanlalruatkima, C. Lalhmachhuani, and Zosangpuii securing the first, second, and third positions, respectively. The Col VL Ruata Award was presented to Paul Ngurthantluanga Vanchhawng for excelling in various extracurricular activities beyond academics. Alex Vanlalruatkima also delivered a speech on behalf of the students.

The program was chaired by Prof. Zoramthara Zadeng. Prof. Swati M Patki, Dean of ZMC&H, administered the oath-taking for the new graduates, and Prof. Benjamin Lalrinpuia, Organising Secretary, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
