The historic cannons that adorned the porch of the Quarter Guard of the 1st Assam Rifles Battalion in Aizawl for more than a century, which were taken outside Mizoram when the Battalion moved to Nagaland will now be brought back to its original home. Intensive efforts had been made for its recovery by INTACH Aizawl for the last couple of years. On the request of INTACH, the Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla had taken up the matter with the Union Home Minister Shri P Chidambaram during his last visit to Mizoram in April this year.
The Chief Minister had again discussed the matter with the Union Home Minister and the Director General Assam Rifles Maj. Gen. Lakhanpal, during his recent visit to New Delhi. In response to the Chief Minister request, the Cannons will now be brought back to Mizoram and are expected to arrive before 15th May. This decision was made keeping in view the sentiments of the Mizo people and in consonance with the motto of the Assam Rifles ‘Friends of the Hill People’. The cannons will be displayed in their original position infront of the heritage Quarter Guard building.
