No.203/2021-2022

Aizawl, the 12th July 2021 : Home Minister Pu Lalchamliana today held a press briefing in his office chamber, where he made a statement on the border issue between Mizoram and Assam. Information & Public Relations Minister Pu Lalruatkima, School Education Minister Pu Lalchhandama Ralte, MLA of Serlui Constituency Pu Lalrinsanga Ralte, Home Secretary Pi Lalbiaksangi and IGP Pu John Neihlaia were also present at the press briefing.

In his statement, the Home Minister pointed out that boundary disputes between Mizoram and Assam date back to the colonial era and continue to be raised by the elected bodies under the District Council, Union Territory and the State of Mizoram and its people, but regretfully, the matter has remained unresolved till today. Referring to the incident which took place last week at Buarchep in the border area wherein crops of some Mizo farmers had been destroyed by police forces of Assam, he strongly condemned the unfortunate incident. The Home Minister also states that adequate compensation must be given by the Government of Assam to the affected farmers and that the Government of Mizoram would follow up this demand.

Further, the Home Minister stated that additional Mizoram police forces have been deployed to the affected areas, which will hopefully remove public fear and ensure a sense of normalcy. He further informed the press that the Chief Minister will convene an all-party meeting on 14th July, 2021 (Wednesday) to discuss the border issue, which will also include representatives of NGOs and the joint-church body, MKHC.
