Cleanliness Week, 2019 which will be observed during 2nd to 9th October, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation of India, Mahatma Gandhi, was inaugurated for Lawngtlai District by Pu H. Chhuanawma, Executive Member i/c LAD, Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), today morning at Areopagy of Lawngtlai.

In his inaugural address, Pu H. Chhuanawma remarked that Lawngtlai has become cleaner year by year due to the efforts exerted by the state government, LADC, NGOs and general population, but to strive for a still cleaner Lawngtlai is everyone's responsibility, he added. He encouraged the gathering to comply with the Plastic Free India campaign and minimise their use of plastics for the sake of their own health and the environment.

The programme was chaired by Pi Rochuangkimi Khenglawt, District Project Officer (DPO), UD&PA Lawngtlai and a Pledge for a Plastic Free India under the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign was taken. Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai, Pi Shashanka Ala also delivered a speech on cleanliness.

As a part of Fit India Campaign, Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) also organised a plog run this morning in which several youth clubs under NYK participated starting out from their residence to Areopagy picking up plastic wastes on the way. Two numbers of football, one volleyball and one net each was given away in this function to the top 5 participating youth clubs who contributed most number of participants.

Several government officials of both state and LADC, NGOs and students attended the function and a mass cleanliness drive was carried out after the function.

During the Cleanliness Week, a competition in three categories - namely, government offices, educational institutions and restaurants/tea stalls - is going to be organised, the results of which will be declared and prizes distributed in the closing function to be held on 9th October.

Meanwhile, Lawngtlai town secured a 5th position among district headquarters and an overall 9th position in the Mizoram Cleanliness Competition, 2019.
