The 71st Republic Day was celebrated at Central YLA Playground, Lawngtlai this morning with the Deputy Commissioner Pi Shashanka Ala, IAS as a Chief Guest.
As part of the celebration, national flag was hoisted at every government institutions and quarters at sunrise. In the ceremonial function at CYLA playground, the Chief Guest unfurled the national flag and acknowledged the 11 marching contingents who salute the tricolour.
Delivering a speech, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted various achievements of the District in the past year, mentioning that there are 31943 numbers of active job card holders in the District and 76 days of employment have been provided per household during the current financial year. She stated that 89.74% of the construction of the KMMTTP highway has been completed and other roads within the District are also being maintained and repaired. She said a 50-bedded District Hospital will be functional from February 2020 and Combined Water Supply Scheme for Rulkual, R. Vanhne, Paithar and Saikah will be be commissioned within this financial year.
The DC also mentioned the success of "Kan Sikul, Kan Huan" project through which percentage of stunted children (35.3%) and underweight children (21.3%) has been brought down to less than 10%. She assured the gathering crowd that the government is committed to provide safe and sufficient drinking water, regular power supply, sufficient supply of foodstuffs and other commodities, efficient transport and communication infrastructures and other essential services to the people for which she asked the support and cooperation of the general public.
After delivering her speech, the Chief Guest distributed various prizes in connection with the celebration.
In the ceremonial parade, Jehova Jire High School bagged the 1st prize among school contingents, followed by Ngurnunsangi English School and Govt Region Higher Secondary School respectively. Among unarmed contingents, Govt Model English School Scouts & Guides secured the 1st position followed by Downtown English School Scouts & Guides and Don Bosco School NCC respectively. Besides these, prizes were also given to judges, parade commander, Mizoram Police armed contingent, Samagra Shiksha Pipe Band and the remaining parade contingents.
Men's champion of the Republic Day Volleyball Running Trophy was College Veng Volleyball Club while BDA Volleyball Ball Club was women's champion. In the Republic Day Badminton Tournament 2020, K. Lalrotluanga (Chandmary BC) won men's singles, Tlangthanmawii and PC Vanlalzawmi (Electric Veng BC) won women's doubles, Lalropeka (Electric Veng BC) won under 15 boys' singles and C. Lalramhlimpuia (Chandmary BC) won under 13 boys' singles.
The best performing schools in "Kan Sikul, Kan Huan" project - SSA Residential School (AOC Veng Lawngtlai), L-VI Primary School-I (College Veng), Longpuighat Comprehensive M/S, Ajasora-III P/S, Govt H/S Bualpui NG and Govt M/S Bualpui NG were also awarded with appreciation and cash incentive.
The ceremonial function was attended by LADC CEM Pu T. Zakunga, Chairman Pu V. Zirsanga, Lawngtlai SP Pu Amit Goel IPS, elected members of LADC, state and district council officials, leaders of NGOs and political parties, media personnel, students and general public. But since this year's Republic Day falls on Sunday, VIP At Home party was not organised.
