Deputy Commissioner of Lunglei District Mrs K. Lalrinzuali today chaired a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee at her Office Chamber. The meeting was attended by the concerned Government officials including Lunglei SP Mr C. Lalthanmawia, member secretary DTO Mrs Carolyn LB Khiangte, NGO’s and leaders of the Zoram Drivers Union.

The Deputy Commissioner, who is also the chairman of the District Road Safety Committee, reviewed the status of implementation of State Road Safety Policy within the District, while also reviewing the activities under the Road Protection Squad. She directed the SDPO Lunglei to prepare a Road Safety Action Plan for the District as a whole, to be submitted within the month of Spetember. Stressing on the need to develop capacities at community level for undertaking sustainable road safety programmes, the DC directed the Committee to form Road Protection Squads at the Village/Locality levels.

Lunglei SP Mr C. Lalthanmawia reported that the Traffic Police Lunglei conducts routine Special Drives on Road Safety within the town area and levy fines when there is a breach of Traffic rules. Fine collection amounted to Rs.9,74,320/- in 2017, Rs.8,09,875/ in 2018 and from January to  July 2019, the police have collected Rs. 4,27,200/- so far from the public. The SP stated that under the Lunglei Town Surveillance Project, 38 CCTV cameras have been installed within the town.

The Committee deliberated on various Agenda points ranging from Road safety measures especially identification of major accident prone areas and black spots, conducting Road Safety Programmes at regular intervals, improvement of traffic movement within Lunglei Town, and review on activities of the Road Protection Squad.
