World Environment Day (WED) is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to commemorate United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockhlom, Sweden that year. The first World Environment Day was on June 5, 1973. World Environment Day is similar to Earth Day. Under the theme 'Many Species. One Planet. One Future', this year's event will celebrate the incredible diversity of life on Earth as part of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
The earth has been facing drastic changes due to rapid globalisation which resulted in the changing of lifestyles of the human beings which further affected the natural balances with a possible dire consequences and Mizoram cannot be counted out today.
Mizoram, once covered by green forests and drained by several perennial rivers and streams which boasts of such a rich diversity of wildlife and plants has now become deteriorated due to large scale jhumming, reckless exploitation of forests and rivers in the guise of the so called development. We have been negligent of the environmental degradation of our beloved state in our own hands and we are no longer in a position to turn a blind eye to this, it is high time we do something to rectify the mistakes we have made in the past and ensure the same does not happen again in future. We have no one else to blame but ourselves in this matter.
Environment Day is not people-specific, it involves everyone and people from anywhere can take part in commemorating this day. People from every walks of life participated and we can no longer sit back and watch this, let us ask ourselves today what we can do about it ? There is no such thing big enough or small enough to save this world. Let us find out what we can do and let us start doing it from this day and repeat it everyday, let us also teach others to save the environment, there are so many things and ways to work out, let us always strive to find new ways to save our environment. If we work together and help each other, we can save the world.
