Amidst COVID-19 restrictions, 'Chapchar Kut', the most popular festival of the Mizos was celebrated yesterday following the strict guidelines in the state capital, in a blended progamme, this forenoon. Chief Minister Zoramthanga graced the opening ceremony organised at Vanapa Hall, Aizawl which was hosted by Pu R.Lalzirliana, Minister, Art & Culture. This was followed by Virtual Celebration programme broadcasted Live through Television channels and Social media. 

On this festival of great cultural showcase of the Mizos, Kutpa (Chief Guest of the Festival) Pu Zoramthanga, Chief Minister called for unity of the Mizo diaspora in different continents, and offer solidarity to the Mizo brethren residing in Myanmar.

In his opening address of Chapchar Kut, Pu R.Lalzirliana, Minister Art & Culture gave a short but detail introduction to the origin and a brief history of Chapchar Kut. 

Chapchar Kut, the most popular among the three major festivals in Mizoram is rather a popular ritual connected closely connected with Rice cultivation. Historically, it is celebrated in the month of March every year, after forest lands were cleared and prepared for farming, which was an arduous and life risking task. Singing, dancing, feasts and hospitality marked this festival which marked the few days of indulgence they could afford in their hard labour filled days. 

This year, due to Covid-19 pandemic, the annual open air celebration programme was substituted by Virtual celebration programme. This was broadcasted through televisions and online platform. Top artistes and dance troupes perfomed various traditional songs and and dances in the programme.
