The Governor of Mizoram, MM Lakhera, PVSM,AVSM,VSM today graced a cultural programme called "Gitanjali", a cultural programme in honour Rabindranath Tagore, as the Chief Guest at Vana Pa Hall, Aizawl. Pu Lal Thanzara, MLA, Parliamentary Secretary also graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. The event was organised by the Hindustan Club, Mizoram, as part of Rabindranath Janmotsav 2010-11 (a year long celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore) which is also observed throughout the world.

In his speech, the Governor praised the legacy of Tagore by saying that he is not anly a poet, but a future man who is having a great vision of India, and a true patriot. He also said that Tagore was a secular man and a true nationalist who wanted to merge  the various cultures of India whlie keeping the original identity of each one of them.

The Governor also highlighted the need to rediscover the country's glorious past bay saying that it is sad to see that we tend to forget what our great country had achieved over a period of time, highlighting the imperialist rulers' intention to rub off our great culture and the efforts taken by them, the Governor said that the true citizens of India should never make the Imperialists' wish come true and ask the audience to rediscover their glorious roots and cherish the rich cultural heritage of India, and expressed his wish that the younger generation be ignited by this cultural programme in valuing our rich cultural heritage.

The Governor also mentioned the need to maintain communal harmony by saying that it is disheartening to see us dividing ourselves over several trivial issues and warned that this trend is leading us nowhere and should not be continued. He said that we need to respect and celebrate each other's culture and religion to proudly claim the so called 'unity in diversity' which so made the country stand out in the world. The Governor also expressed his happiness in the effort taken by the Mizoram University in translating the "Gitanjali" in Mizo language. He also highlighted the need to translate Mizo literary works into other languages so that it may be better appreciated and celebrated by other cultures.

The Guest of Honour, Pu Lal Thanzara, Parliamentary Secretary also expressed his admiration to the works of tagore and his personality by saying that Tagore's works have no parallel and is truly the work of a genius. He also said that Tagore is a lover of hill and hillmen as the influence of hill and hillmen, especially the North-East can be found in most of his major works. He also said that great men like Tagore do not belong to any particular community and his identity and personality crosses all barriers, and he is universal, loved and respected by every community in the world.

The Governor felicitated the Hindustan Club members who hold rank and distinctions in the HSLC&HSSLC examination, the winners of Quiz and Recitation competitions organised by the Hindustan Club while Pu Lal Thanzara felicitated invited artistes in and outside Mizoram.

The Hindustan Club, Mizoram also felicitated His Excellency, the Governor of Mizoram and Pu Lal Thanzara, Parliamentary Secretary for their support and unending encouragement to the Club.

Todays Programme was divided into three sessions, the first session began with salutation of the National Anthem followed by lighting of the sacred lamp by the dignitaries.

In the second and third session, a cultural programme was held wherein several artistes in and outside Mizoram performed dances, dramas, recitations, songs etc. based on the great works of Rabindranath Tagore.
