Speaking at a special event marking World Autism Acceptance Month, Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) acknowledged the founding and philanthropic contributions of the Spastic Society of Mizoram. He commended the organization for its dedicated service in supporting differently-abled children and expressed his appreciation for the committed efforts of its leadership and the staff of Gilead Special School. Addressing the parents of children with special needs, the Governor remarked, “The Lord has chosen you to be the special ones entrusted with extra responsibilities to look after the special ones.”

Underscoring the government’s inclusive vision, the Governor highlighted that the Prime Minister has advocated the use of the term Divyangjan, the children of God in place of disabled or handicapped, to foster greater dignity and respect for individuals with special needs. The Governor also encouraged the Spastic Society to expand its outreach, particularly in rural areas, to enhance accessibility and support for all children requiring special care. He further affirmed his commitment to extend all possible support towards the organization’s continued growth and impact.

The event was chaired by Pi Chhingpuii, Chairperson of the Spastic Society of Mizoram, who delivered the welcome address. Prof. Margaret Ch. Zama, a founding member, presented a brief history and report on the Society’s work. Pi Zokhumi Vankung, Vice Chairperson, proposed the vote of thanks and concluded the programme.

Following the programme, the Governor toured the classrooms and various facilities of Gilead Special School and interacted with the staff and children.

Founded in April 1989 as the Society for Rehabilitation of Spastic Children, the organization was renamed Spastic Society of Mizoram in 2005. Gilead Special School, established on April 10, 1990, serves children with multiple disabilities.

Currently, the school cares for around 135 specially abled children, including around 30 children diagnosed with autism. Due to space limitations, the school is unable to accommodate all applicants. It houses 32 boarders and employs approximately 50 staff members. In addition to academics, the school also operates a Vocational Training Centre and an Adult Recreational Centre.

This year’s observance of World Autism Acceptance Month began on 2nd April, specifically designated by the United Nation in 2007, to raise awareness and promote understanding and support for autistic individuals. It is designed to highlight the issues affecting people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families, educate the public on support services and the stigmatize the perspective of those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
