Aizawl the 22nd June 2023 : The Mizoram Legislative Assembly closed its year-long Golden Jubilee celebration yesterday with an august event held in the Assembly Annexe Conference Hall. Besides the Hon’ble Speaker Shri Lalrinliana Sailo, the function was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Tawnluia, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Mizoram Legislative Assembly as well as representatives from the Former Legislators’ Association of Mizoram (FLAM).

Addressing the various dignitaries, Deputy Chief Minister applauded the noble works started by former legislators and implored the present legislators to walk in the same path and to emulate the diligence and industriousness of the former. Shri Tawnluia stated that the Mizoram Legislative Assembly had always held a dignified status because of its constant practice of peaceful deliberations and discussions whilst formulating policies for the development of the state. He also requested all citizens to cooperate well with the elected representatives in order to work justly and righteously, while also expressing hope that the present values and ethical conduct of the legislators inside the Assembly House, which had brought the state of Mizoram to a renowned and esteemed position to the outside world, would continue to endure and be passed on to the future legislators.

Stating how the State of Mizoram got its UT and Statehood, Deputy Speaker Shri H. Biakzauva commended the forerunners, who worked for the unity of the different tribes of Mizoram and for the State to be able to take up administration of its own. He said that all past and present legislators have worked tiressly to achieve the development of the state. Mentioning the fact that at present, Mizoram was host to quite a huge number of refugees from neighbouring countries and Manipur, the Deputy Speaker asserted that it had always been attitude of the Mizos to help those in need, which he said was a laudable practice.

Minister Shri Lalthangliana said that it was a delightful privilege to be able to celebrate the Legislative Assembly’s Golden Jubilee during their term and commended the various Speakers of the Assembly who had always maintained the honour and dignity of the House and wished for the House to maintain its reputed momentum.

President of FLAM Shri Liansuama expressed appreciation for the government for consistently tending to the needs of its members. He stated that partners of the deceased former legislators were also inducted as Associate Members, including whom the present membership stood at 154 in total. He hoped that campaigning for the upcoming State Election later this year would be untainted and uncorrupted, so as to carry forward the values and ethical standards of the Mizos.

Hon’ble Speaker Shri Lalrinliana Sailo expressed his gratitude to all the Members for taking the time to attend the closing function of the MLA Golden Jubilee celebration. He also expressed his joy that the cooperation between the legislators had always been cordial and thanked the staffs of the Assembly Secretariat for putting together the celebration of the Golden Jubilee in a grand and befitting manner. He mentioned that politics of Mizoram had always been guided by the code of Christian values of the Mizos. He also informed the gathering about the National Legislators’ Conference recently held in Mumbai, where the good practices of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly were highlighted. The dignified conduct of the legislators inside the House as well as Mizoram being the first State in the country to live telecast its full Assembly session proceeding and the 2nd in the country to implement e-vidhan (paperless) was indeed highly commended, he said. The Hon’ble Speaker also added that development of the state and preservation of Mizoram’s rich cultural heritage had always been the biggest motivation for all legislators and hence, implored the state’s citizens to refrain from often accusing the legislators as being indolent or idle. He pointed out that altogether there have been 232 legislators so far, all of who had left behind a memorable footprint for the development of the State. He also declared that the Assembly House would soon be opened for students to visit, witness and explore, hoping it would benefit them. The Hon’ble Speaker also gifted mementos to all the special invitees.

The Mizoram Legislative Assembly’s Golden Jubilee closing function was chaired by Assembly Commissioner & Secretary Shri Lalhmahruaia Zote, while Deputy Secretary Shri Lalthangmawia reported on the activities and events during the year-long celebration to commemorate the Assembly’s Golden Jubilee.
