BRIEF HISTORY OF NCC

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) was established in India on 15 July 1948 under the NCC Act of 1948. Its motto is “Unity & Discipline.” NCC aims to instill self-discipline among students from a young age and nurture them into responsible, capable, and service-oriented citizens and leaders for society and the nation. NCC units are established in various schools and colleges, and participation is open to both male and female students studying in high schools, higher secondary schools, and colleges.

In Mizoram, the NCC was established in 1964. Currently, there are 4 Battalions: three based in Aizawl—20 Mizoram Bn NCC, 1 Mizoram Bn NCC, and 1 Mizoram Air Squadron NCC—and one based in Lunglei—2 Mizoram Bn NCC. These various battalions were previously under the Silchar Headquarters. However, under the NCC expansion plan, the Government of Mizoram issued a sanction letter on January 18, 2024, to establish an NCC Group HQ in Aizawl. The process of raising the Group Headquarters commenced in July 2025, and officers designated for the headquarters started joining from July 2025 onward. On 29 January 2026, Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma unveiled the Group Headquarters flag, and on 30 January 2026, Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh officially inaugurated the NCC Group Headquarters at Aizawl.

The office operated temporarily at the Sports & Youth Services Department Building in MINECO from October 25, 2025, to May 14, 2026. With today's development, Mizoram will have a permanent NCC Group HQ office under the direct command of a Brigadier.
