Mizoram Upa Pawl, Chawnpui Branch, Aizawl, today celebrated the International Day of Older Persons at a programme held at Presbyterian Church Jubilee Building, Chawnpui. Deputy Chief Minister Pu Tawnluia graced the programme as Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Pu Tawnluia said that reaching an older age should be taken as a privilege and a blessing, not simply because everyone has the good fortune to grow old but also because of the rich knowledge and wisdom a person gains through experience. He urged the elderly to take up the responsibility of educating the younger generation about the rich cultural heritage of the Mizo people, the virtue of respecting elders and self-sacrifice for the service of  others known as” tlawmngaihna”, which is the greatest core of the Mizo value system.

Pu R Zakima, President, Chawnpui Branch, MUP who chaired the programme, gave a welcome speech and an opening remark while the Secretary Pu R Kapthanga highlighted a detailed overview of the achievements and activities undertaken by Chawnpui MUP Branch.

The United Nations General Assembly, on December 14,1990, voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. This day is observed and celebrated by all members of the United Nations to raise awareness of the impact of an ageing population, issues affecting the elderly and also to recognise and appreciate the valuable contributions made by the elderly to the society.
