Aizawl, the 25th January 2022 : Along with the rest of the country, a function was organised at the SAD Conference Hall at MINECO to mark the 12th National Voters’ Day, which was graced by the Chief Secretary Dr. Renu Sharma

Speaking about the significance of National Voters’ Day, the Chief Secretary said the bedrock of democracy is the free and fair elections that we as a country specialise in. She further noted that the theme of this year’s NVD – ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative’ spell out what democracy is all about. Through the instrumentality of the Election Commission and the instrumentality of elections, we are able to ensure that the democracy which has been nurtured by our forefathers moves ahead with free and fair elections, she added.

Highlighting Mizoram’s track record of holding free and fair elections down the years and the contribution of civil society organizations in ensuring elections in a peaceful and transparent manner, she said this is something we must all take pride in and congratulate ourselves on. She called voters to strengthen this democratic tradition which has been continuously involving people in the electoral process. Saying that one of the most critical ways individuals can influence government making is through decision making, she further called up electors to participate wholeheartedly in the electoral process.

The Chief Secretary handed out EPICs to 10 newly enrolled voters to mark the occasion and also distributed appreciation certificates to three best BLOs.

Chief Electoral Officer, Pu P. Jawahar, IAS in his welcome address highlighted various activities undertaken to make new voters aware of the importance of exercising one’s franchise. The NVD pledge was taken by all the attendees. Senior government officials, representatives of various NGOs and students attended the programme.
